The Women, Youth, Peace, and Security Working Group of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) has called on individuals involved in illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey to cease their activities immediately.
The group emphasised that the future of all Ghanaians is at stake due to the environmental and socio-economic impacts of galamsey.
Patience Agyare-Ashie, a member of the group in an interview on the Point of View on Channel One TV on Wednesday highlighted the severe consequences of galamsey, including widespread environmental degradation, water pollution, and the destruction of arable land.
The Working Group called on galamseyers to recognise the gravity of their actions and to stop these nonchalant acts that jeopardise the future of Ghanaians.
“We call on all those especially involved in this nonchalant behaviours to start examining better ways of our future because every citizen of Ghana is being impacted upon by some of these illegal activities,” she stated.
